Chemical Diversity in High-mass Star Formation
نویسنده
چکیده
Massive star formation exhibits an extremely rich chemistry. However, not much evolutionary details are known yet, especially at high spatial resolution. Therefore, we synthesize previously published Submillimeter Array high-spatial-resolution spectral line observations toward four regions of highmass star formation that are in various evolutionary stages with a range of luminosities. Estimating column densities and comparing the spatially resolved molecular emission allows us to characterize the chemical evolution in more detail. Furthermore, we model the chemical evolution of massive warm molecular cores to be directly compared with the data. The four regions reveal many different characteristics. While some of them, e.g., the detection rate of CH3OH, can be explained by variations of the average gas temperatures, other features are attributed to chemical effects. For example, CS is observed mainly at the core-edges and not toward their centers because of temperature-selective desorption and successive gas-phase chemistry reactions. Most nitrogen-bearing molecules are only found toward the hot molecular cores and not the earlier evolutionary stages, indicating that the formation and excitation of such complex nitrogen-bearing molecules needs significant heating and time to be fully developed. Furthermore, we discuss the observational difficulties to study massive accretion disks in the young deeply embedded phase of massive star formation. The general potential and limitations of such kind of dataset are discussed, and future directions are outlined. The analysis and modeling of this source sample reveals many interesting features toward a chemical evolutionary sequence. However, it is only an early step, and many observational and theoretical challenges in that field lie ahead. Hot Molecular Cores and High-mass Star Formation
This review covers hot cores in the context of high-mass star formation. After giving an overview of chemical processes and diversity during high-mass star formation, it reviews the 'warm envelope' phase which probably precedes the formation of hot cores. Some recent deter-minations of the cosmic-ray ionization rate are discussed, as well as recent evidence for hot cores around low-mass stars. ...
متن کاملMolecular abundance ratios as a tracer of accelerated collapse in regions of high mass star formation?
Recent observations suggest that the behaviour of tracer species such as N2H + and CS is significantly different in regions of high and low mass star formation. In the latter, N2H + is a good tracer of mass, while CS is not. Observations show the reverse to be true in high-mass star formation regions. We use a computational chemical model to show that the abundances of these and other species m...
متن کاملTimescales for Low-Mass Star Formation in Extragalactic Environments: Implications for the Stellar IMF
We investigate the physical and chemical conditions necessary for low-mass star formation in extragalactic environments by calculating various characteristic timescales associated with star formation for a range of initial conditions. The balance of these timescales indicates whether low-mass star formation is enhanced or inhibited under certain physical conditions. In this study, we consider t...
متن کاملA Model for Star Formation, Gas Flows and Chemical Evolution in Galaxies at High Redshifts
Motivated by the increasing use of the Kennicutt-Schmidt (K-S) star formation law to interpret observations of high redshift galaxies, the importance of gas accretion to galaxy formation, and the recent observations of chemical abundances in galaxies at z ∼ 2–3, I use simple analytical models to assess the consistency of these processes of galaxy evolution with observations and with each other....
متن کاملChemodynamical simulations with variable IMF
Using self-consistent chemodynamical simulations including star formation, supernova feedback, and chemical enrichment, I show the dependence of cosmic star formation and chemical enrichment histories on the initial mass function (IMF). The effects of Pop-III IMF can be only seen in the elemental abundance ratios at z > ∼ 4 or [Fe/H] < ∼ −2. The preferable IMF has a flatter slope in the case of...
